About Dr. Calvillo

Dr. Calvillo has hands-on, laboratory and field experience with a wide-range of environmental compliance issues. In the last 20 years, she began as a laboratory researcher and blossomed into an educator via the written word.
 
The bench work that engaged her encompasses the chemical and microbiological analysis of wastewater, the development of enrichment cultures for the bioremediation of contaminated soils, and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) analysis of fossilized microorganisms to create a biosignature database for geologic records. As head of various research and development laboratories, she was responsible for the safe use and disposal of chemicals following OSHA and EPA requirements. She has written and edited technical and scientific papers and has published popular science articles in trade magazines, newspapers and on websites. Her education includes a bachelor’s in microbiology, an MS in microbial genetics, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in environmental microbiology, with minors in biochemistry and water quality. Her doctoral research made an important contribution to the area of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) bioremediation and is cited in “Biodegradation and Bioremediation,” a book authored by world-renowned expert, Dr. Martin Alexander. Dr. Calvillo combines her training in environmental laboratories with her background in science writing to elucidate the on-going and upcoming complexities of environmental regulation. <
