GHS Transition Assistance

Prepare Your Organization for GHS Compliance

By learning the implications of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) on your organization, you can transition to the standard without overwhelming your resources. Follow the 6 steps below for a seamless transition to GHS.

1 Stay Informed: Learn how GHS will impact your organization and stay up-to-date on the most current GHS information. Visit our GHS Newsroom for updates on the implementation of GHS in the U.S. and across the globe.

2 Audit your Chemical Inventory: Before transitioning to GHS, you need an accurate count of your chemicals on-site and a matching Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each of those chemicals.

3 Acquire and Maintain an Accurate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Collection: GHS transition will require all MSDSs to be re-authored into the proper GHS format, also known as SDSs.

4 Re-label Chemical Containers: All workplace container labels must be updated to include the new GHS hazard statements, words and pictograms.

5 Train Affected Employees: Employees need educated on the new labels and SDSs. OSHA has stated employers will need to train employees within 2 years of the final GHS ruling. However, if you import products from countries that have already implemented GHS, your employee training may need to begin immediately.

6 Update Written Programs Written programs will need updated to include changes to labeling, MSDS communication and employee training.

Unsure Where to Start?

As the leader in chemical, risk and EHS compliance solutions, Safetec has a simple, cost-effective solution for every step of your GHS transition, whether you are a small company or fortune-500 organization.

 On-Site Chemical Inventory Audit Services

As mentioned, a successful GHS transition requires a comprehensive understanding of your current chemical inventory. Safetec offers on-site chemical inventory audit services to give you an understanding of the products you have on-site, the locations of these products and of any possible compliance gaps you may have. Safetec’s Inventory Specialists are equipped with portable bar-code scanning devices which use Safetec-patented capture and integration technology, the most advanced and efficient on the market. The devices are also available for rent if you prefer for your own employees to conduct the inventory audit.

 SDS Acquisition, Monitoring and Management

Acquiring and maintaining an accurate SDS collection is a breeze with Safetec’s SDS Acquisition, Monitoring and Management services. Safetec will obtain the SDS as soon as it is available from the manufacturer, place it in your web-based software system and archive the outdated MSDS.

 Container Labeling

The Safetec System’s Labeling Module easily creates and prints GHS compliant labels of any size.
